CHOIR and Kids Hope Ethiopia

Kids Hope Ethiopia is a unique project sponsored by CHOIR (Canadian Humanitarian Organization for International Relief). The Foothills Charity Triathlon is a fundraiser for this project. Presently in Ethiopia, 1.2 million children under the age of 15 are living as orphans on the street. Many have lost their parents to diseases such as Aids and Tuberculosis. Most do not have money for the basic necessities of life, such as food, clothing, and shelter. They can not go to school as they have no money for school fees, books and uniforms. Many of these street children are the sole providers for impoverished grandparents and siblings and try to earn money shining shoes and selling wares.

In September, 2005 CHOIR partnered with an existing program in Ethiopia called Home to Home. Working together these organizations were able to place 40 children who were living on the streets in foster homes in Ethiopia. These children are being provided with food, clothing, shelter, and education. The program, called Kids Hope Ethiopia requires $30 a month per child to provide these necessities.

The goal is to support these children through their schooling, helping them to find meaningful employment so they can sustain themselves and their future families. CHOIR hopes to expand the number of children in the program and establish similar programs in other countries.

The Foothills Charity Triathlon is raising money for these children in Ethiopia. We hope to sponsor as many children as possible in the coming year. Race participants may also raise pledge donations for the CHOIR program or make a direct donation as well. Please see the registration for more information. Lets work together as a community in Okotoks, where we are so fortunate, to sponsor as many children in Ethiopia as possible.
